Exploring the Unknown

So this summer’s “theme” is exploration and discovery. I’ve been trying to fill everyday with fun trips and activities, and for bad weather days, I try to stay productive. I’ve been trying out more photography this summer to capture the new memories with my friends who have joined me on this adventure. I will be posting with frequent updates about the unique things I’ve done.

My friends and I went hiking at a wildlife reserve center. The weather was warm, but not too humid for a lot of walking. Naturally, we veered off the trail and ended up on the marsh bank. We ended up finding hundreds of horseshoe crab bodies, which made a great photo op. We also discovered some abandoned boats, and mysterious wreckage.

There’s something about nature walks that just transports you into another world (unless you’re used to wildlife and camping on a regular basis). Being a city girl, I really enjoy moments like these!

I am a Girl…

Yes, that’s me. The girl who caused an overnight controversy with a heartfelt and blunt art piece about sexual abuse. I have learned so much just from the feedback and the experience of going viral. I deliberately waited a month after the post to discuss it, because I wanted to write about how much the widespread feedback has affected me until today. I have heard from many of you who could relate to the story behind this poem. Viewers across the globe have been an inspiration to me and reminded me why I am an artist. The fact that this has reached thousands of people is a dream. And the dream come true is the amount of messages I have received from men and women who told me that this piece impacted their life in a positive way.

You shared your stories and your reaction to these words, and you told me how this saved your life, improved your mood, and made your day. I am so happy to hear how many of you were grateful for the poem and were able to extract so much from it. I wish, from the bottom of my heart, that your pain eases, and that you can continue to stay strong and live life to the fullest with absolute happiness.

If you are currently in a relationship that seems abusive, and you find yourself repeatedly living through the same difficult and horrific experiences , please seek help immediately. Remember that you are worth so much more, and there is no need to put yourself through the strain and anguish of staying in a relationship that is not working. The situation can change if you take the initiative to fix it.

I hope that I can continue to create art that can touch thousands and elicit responses as strongly as I am a Girl has. For quite some time I have thought about advancing my career in helping individuals and families during times of emotional struggle, and the past year has finalized my decision. After witnessing so many people dealing with heartbreak and abuse, I realized that I can help make a difference. I want to get further involved in helping people take the steps to finding happiness and peace, because that is life’s journey.

I am glad, and deeply touched, by how many of you reached out to me with a new found perspective. I hope you know that you have equally inspired me and encouraged me to chase my dreams.

Much love, xo

Beautiful job, everyone! I really love them all!

And while I’m posting BlueStreak art, this piece didn’t make the deadline, but I’d like to share it. It’s a drawing of Max by Erabelle.

If you’d like to share your BlueStreak fandom in any way, I’d love to see! You can also discuss the comic on Facebook!

Have a wonderful week!

Korra Fanart WIP

Work in progress of my MaKorra art. They are too cute! I can’t get enough of this series.
I’m all for Mako and Korra, but it does break my heart each time Bolin expresses any interest in the Avatar.
The finished version of this drawing is going to animate. It’s been a while since I’ve done one of those, so this is very exciting! You can see the finished product in the near future (or right now, if you’re reading this in the near future) on my Deviantart page.

Wash Away My Broken Dreams

Catherine is mastering the element of water. She was born with the power to control water, but spends more time being controlled by it.
In other news, I wanted to address my recent Disney experience, to kind of clear the air. I got a lot of questions from people asking about what happened/why I didn’t win, so I just wanted to say something briefly about it, and explain the situation.
As some of you might remember, I spent the past couple of weeks rallying people to vote for me in a contest run by the Disney Store. Five finalists were chosen from all of the entries, and people had to vote for their favorite design, and the winner would have their shirt on Disney Store shelves. I did everything in my power, as did my friends and fans, to get votes. I posted it everywhere I could, and had the news spread on Twitter, Youtube, Deviantart, etc…I think everyone worked really hard to help me win. I accumulated thousands of votes during the duration of the contest. After voting officially closed last week, I held first place. In the end, first place was handed to another contestant. Nothing was publicly announced regarding this decision, and it caused a lot of confusion amongst my voters. I was deeply hurt by the shocking new winner announcement. I went from the biggest high to feeling terribly deflated and cheated.
It’s simple, really. We, the contestants, pretty much signed away our rights. Disney had the legal chance to alter any of the votes and announce whoever they wanted as the final winner. They declared some votes “invalid,” and sorted “valid” and “invalid” votes without any notification to us as to what was going on. Legal? Yes. Fair? No. But life isn’t exactly fair.
A lot of you have reached out to me asking if there is something you can do to help change the results and/or the situation. I’d like to discourage you from trying to contact the Disney Store on my behalf. (I know many of you already have.) The results are not going to change. I was initially upset with the situation, but everyone has been extremely supportive and now it’s yesterday’s news. I was surprised to receive so many emails and messages about it. People who I don’t even know, but took the time to vote for me daily, reached out to offer words of wisdom and comfort. I am so grateful for how kind you have been to me through this grueling process.
I thank you all for voting and for working so hard for me. I’m sorry that things turned out the way they did, but there is nothing we can do. I hope you know that your support means the world to me, and that is the main thing that I’ve extracted from the situation. My supporters are amazing, and no one can take that from me.

Don’t Mess…

Mmhmm, don’t mess with the princess, Alec! Catherine never holds back.
Another can’t-sleep-late-night-doodle, and not my best slap-in-the-face drawing. I have this tendency to draw in the dark…that can’t be good for my art…or my eyes…

Legend of Korra

Anyone totally digging Republic City and wanna move there? It so awesome, why isn’t it real?
Quick sketch of Korra, Bolin, and Mako of The Legend of Korra. I had an urge to draw them in Renaissance attire. Yeah, I’m all for Korra x Mako, if you must know.

Character Doodles

I don’t know what’s going on with this dress, but I was enjoying the smooth creamy feel of my colored pencils so much – I just kept drawing stuff. Catherine, what are you wearing?! Your dress swallowed a lamp shade!

Alec makes crazy faces. I also end up making his eyebrows thicker each time I draw them…The personality is all in the eyebrows!

Rain Falls…

Alec generally doesn’t emote beyond his sly smile and devious one-eyebrow-schtick, so drawing a sad, helpless Alec is actually refreshing. Hm, what could he be upset about…?

More Art…

Catherine (well, “boy-Catherine”) gets a surprise greeting from Alec.

When was the last time I updated my blog? I have so much art to post here, I would love to revive my blog this season. I went off and joined tumblr, and have this odd guilty feeling that I cheated on WordPress. I still heart you, WordPress. You are so much easier to use! WP has posts solely dedicated to work-in-progress art, while tumblr will have mostly finished artwork. I think some WP followers might not realize that I don’t plan on posting finished work here. I have the final pieces on so many other websites, including my portfolio, so this blog is more about the raw process of my drawings, and less about the final work. I apologize if you were expecting something more dazzling here.

Anyway, I have a LOT of Alec and Catherine stuff to catch you all up on. The comic now has a temporary title: Hero of Agarin, which is not the final title yet, but I needed something. I will be referring to it as just “Hero,” because the rest of the title is changing on a monthly basis. So, more to come real soon!
