Heavenly Sword

Here’s an inked image of Nariko from the PS3 game, Heavenly Sword. It’s been so long since I’ve had any free time to dedicate to gaming, and I finally had a night off to play. I forgot how awesomely fun (and intense) this game is. I don’t particularly love the main character, but there’s something super cool about her.  How many games have female leads that run around slashing soldiers with giant swords? Exactly. You can now see this colored at my DA account over here.

Peter Parker and MJ

“Oh, Peter…I wasn’t checking out Spider-Man photos in magazines again!”
I’ve been reading lots of Spider-Man comics lately, and I just adore this pair. Started doodling and ended up coloring this really quickly. It’s too sloppy to post in my gallery so…here it is in the sketch blog!

Can You Trust an Artist?

If his name is Alec and he looks like that guy up there, then no.
I thought of this moment where he asks Catherine to trust him, and any smart woman would know better. As I build up Alec’s character I try to think of what makes him who he is. I thought that if the story takes place during the Renaissance, he can be an artist. But his problem is that it’s not inspiration, but aspiration he lacks. He doesn’t believe in dreaming to become bigger and better. He creates his work for the heck of it, and has more of a reputation as the local Casanova than as an artist. I always wanted to create a character who thinks he’s got everything, but deep down knows he has nothing. This creates an internal conflict, and the search for self.

And if Alec doesn’t take anything seriously, he’ll have to have quite a range of emotions; sly, sarcastic, witty, etc. Please bear with me as I figure this guy out.

Concept Doodles + Disney Study

Here are some quick, sloppy, concept sketches. I’m still trying to figure these characters out. More Alec and Catherine from my upcoming comic which still doesn’t have a title. I do know it’ll take place in England and France during the Renaissance. I’ve been doing lots and lots of costume studies based on Renaissance art and fashion books. I love the hats with the feathers on them. I want the comic to have lots of ’em! You can click here to see more doodles from this batch.

The drawings above are not totally mine so I can’t take credit for them. The first row is an animation study from Beauty and the Beast. The second image is my rendition of a very famous drawing from the original Mulan storyboards. I first saw this drawing as wall art in Disneyland and it nearly moved me to tears. I was ecstatic to find it among the published storyboard collections (I have so many books, I don’t remember which one I saw it in). Anyway, I love that moment so much in the film, so I just wanted to try drawing it. It’s nowhere near as awesome as the original, but it was fun to do!

Late Night Brainstorming…

Because late nights are when the mind works best! Unfortunately, I didn’t have a successful creative spurt. I’ve been trying to draw in my sketchbook each night, but some nights nothing comes to me, or my hands just don’t do what my brain wants them to. Here are some very random sketches. It includes my new princess character, Catherine, whose name and design I haven’t finalized yet. She is the main character of that project Alec appears in…of course that doesn’t even have a title yet as I still have details and a plot to sort out. Oh, and just for fun, I did a quick doodle of Milo from Disney’s Atlantis, because I adore him!

Alec Sketches

Alec is one of those characters who always manages to get into trouble. When I sketch him, I try to capture him in many expressions for the many situations he’ll find himself in. Funny thing is that while I’m working on these designs, I tend to forget how to get back in to BlueStreak-mode. My mind just freezes for a moment and I have to remind myself to simplify my art style when I work on that. But while working on Alec I have to remember that details are ok. Working on many styles at once can be confusing sometimes.

Cleaning Up…

So I was cleaning out my computer, dumping files onto old hard drives, and every time I go through an old hard drive I feel the need to browse through it. I found lots of drawings and sketches I don’t even remember ever having done. I also found lots of in-progress art I seem to have never gotten around to finishing. And I realized, hey! I’ve got a sketchblog! Here I go dumping some art over here. I mean, what else is this blog for, anyway?
The image above is from my realistic coloring phase. Then I learned that I much rather do cartoons than realism, so I never did finish that piece. I honestly have no idea how old that is. And below, some sketches from Winter ’10. I was simultaneously planning BlueStreak and Bounty Hunted, so I did lots of concept art for both. More sketches like these will be available on the BlueStreak CD which I will talk more about next month!
